Scientific activities/interests

Brief summary of performed investigations

(i) My post-graduate activity and my Ph.D work were devoted to theoretical investigation of electron-beam diagnostics of non-equilibrium rarefied gas flows and rotational relaxation of molecular gases expanded into vacuum.
A considerable part of the work was devoted to the determination of the probabilities of state-to-state rotational transitions during excitation of molecular nitrogen by an electron impact. Investigation of elementary processes in electron-beam plasma, development and application of spectroscopic and electron-beam diagnostic methods for investigation of kinetics of rotational relaxation in rarefied gas mixtures were performed.

(ii) At the same time I studied electron-beam plasma. The Boltzmann equation for the distribution function of secondary electrons produced by high-energy diagnostic electron beam was derived and the method of its solution was developed. Further this method was applied for the study of the excitation of gas mixtures for plasma chemical purposes.
Since the late eighties till 1994, I was involved in the development of new method of plasma chemical deposition of thin silicone films from free jets expanded into vacuum and activated by an electron beam and secondary electrons. The work was focused on the gas-phase chemical reactions, excitation and ionization of molecules in argon-SiH4 mixtures by electron impact. These results were included in my doctoral degree (1997).

(iii) Since 1994 till 1997 I was involved in the study of fullerene formation in an electric arc reactor. The kinetic model of carbon clusters formation in turbulent jet expanded from a narrow graphite arc based on the solution of Smoluchowski equation was developed. Special consideration was given to the non-compact structures of carbon clusters.


Research in progress and major areas of interest

(i) Since 1997 I am involved in the study of spherical striations in low temperature plasma. Spherical striations are observed in our laboratory in 1997 for the first time and present a set of electric double layers around small central anode. First kinetic and self-consistent drift-diffusion models of spherical discharge were performed. Models include:
a) non-stationary balance equations for electrons, ions, and Poisson equation for self-consistent electric field;
b) non-local non-stationary Boltzmann equation for electron distribution function, drift-diffusion equation for electrons ions, and the Poisson equation for self-consistent electric field. Transport coefficients for electrons and ionization frequency by the electron impact in drift-diffusion equations are determined from the solution of Boltzmann equation.

(ii) The major area of my research activity is kinetic of low-density gases and plasma, elementary processes in low temperature plasma, gas spectroscopy, clusters formation and related topics.
