The Institute of Thermophysics was established in 1957 in Novosibirsk Scientific Center (Akademgorodok). Its first head was the academician I.I. Novikov, a specialist in technical thermodynamics and thermophysical properties of substances. From 1964 up to 1986 the Institute was headed by academician S.S. Kutateladze, the prominent physicist, who made a great contribution to numerous areas of thermophysics and power engineering. For example: the hydrodynamic theory of boiling crisis, the theory of heat transfer similarity in physical and chemical transformations, limiting relative laws for friction and heat transfer in a turbulent boundary layer, and the heat transfer and hydrodynamics of liquid metals. In 1994 the Institute of Thermophysics was named after S. Kutateladze. Academician V.E. Nakoryakov who was at the head of the Institute from 1986 through 1997, developed a number of new scientific directions such as wavy dynamics of two-phase systems, heat and mass transfer in a porous medium, hydrodynamics of gas-liquid flows, absorption heat transformers, and electro-diffusion method for flow diagnostics.

Now the Institute of Thermophysics SB RAS, being one of the leading centers of the heat transfer theory and physical hydrodynamics, is dealing with fundamental research in the following areas:

Several unique experimental techniques  have been developed at the Institute: the electro-diffusion method for the measurement of shear stress and local velocities in a flow, stroboscopic visualization of particles, LDA systems (including those with fiber optics), electron-beam diagnostics of rarefied gases, and the method of colored Hilbert- visualization. The Institute possesses a unique shadow device with extremely high aperture.

We have a number of unique computerized experimental setups: wind tunnels, a large hydrodynamic and freon loops, large-scale vacuum chambers "Vika" and "Viking", a fire bench with plasma ignition, and a setup for study of thermodynamic properties of melts.

The successful activity of the Institute is insured to great extent to our high-qualified specialists inclusive 2 academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2 corresponding members of RAS, 40 Professors, and 95 Ph.D.s. The number of research personnel at the Institute amounts to 185, and the total number of employees is 490. The successes  of our scientists were recognized by Lenin's Award, The State Awards of the USSR, Lenin Komsomol Awards, The Russian Federation State Awards, and Awards of the Russian Academy of Sciences and international organizations. Two discoveries have been patented in 1978 and 1986.

The Institute has close scientific relations with foreign research centers and companies in the USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Norway, Japan, Poland, The Czech Republic, China, and South Korea. We are have research contracts with several world-wide companies such as "Air Products and Chemicals", "Hewlett Packard", "General Motors", etc.

About 300 papers and a few books per year are published by the Institute. The Institute publishes  two scientific journals as well, namely  "Russian Journal of Engineering Thermophysics" (in English) and "Thermophysics and Aeromechanics”. Latter is published both in English and Russian together with the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physics. Many of our leading specialists are on the editorial boards of several Russian and foreign journals.

The Institute regularly holds traditional scientific conferences and seminars -  the Siberian Thermophysical Seminar, the Seminar for Thermophysical Chairs at the Universities of Siberia and the Far East, the Workshop on Transport Phenomena in Two-Phase Flow, and the Conference on Optical Methods in Flow Research. The particular interest to these seminars and the fruitful discussions prove the importance and urgency of  presented problems.

The training of specialists for the Institute of Thermophysics is one of the important goals. The Institute of Thermophysics works as a research and study ground for students who are majoring in Non-equilibrium Processes at Novosibirsk State University, and for three majors at Novosibirsk State Technical University (Heat Power Stations, Mechanical Equipment for Aircraft, Optical Information Technologies). The Chemical Engineering major of Kuzbas State Technical University is based at the Institute as well. The training scientific center "Thermophysics and Thermal Power Engineering" has been established at the Institute. We have three specialized Scientific Councils for Doctorate degrees.

The International Scientific Center for Thermophysics and Power Engineering works at the Institute. We have a joint venture "The Siberian Center of Thermometry" established together with the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences and Novosibirsk Center for metrology, standardization, and certification.

The advantage of Thermophysics as a branch of science consists in the fact  that most of the fundamental results can have direct applications. Therefore we put a special  emphasis on practical applications, and first of all, in the field of environment friendly power engineering and energy conservation.
