On August 28, 2024, a panel discussion on the professional trajectories of young scientists within the framework of the mega-grant program was held at the Technoprom-2024 forum. The main goal of the event was to discuss the role of mega-grants in supporting and developing young researchers, preparing them for major research projects, and creating the conditions for the successful realization of their career ambitions in science. The discussion was organized by Inconsult, the mega-grant program operator, which has been actively supporting early-career researchers and their development in Russia for several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

he event was moderated by Elena Gruzinova, Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy in Scientific and Technological Development of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. She noted that one of the key objectives of the Decade of Science and Technology is attracting young people to the R&D sector. Gruzinova emphasized that scientific development is impossible without attracting young specialists, and that scientific careers should begin during university studies. Megagrants, she noted, play a key role in supporting young scientists, providing them not only with funding, but also with access to modern infrastructure and a unique scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the key participants in the discussion was Sergey Sazhin, Head of the Multiphase Precision Systems Laboratory at the Kutateladze Institute of Thermophysics SB RAS and Professor at the University of Brighton in the UK. Sazhin emphasized how mega-grant laboratories facilitate the training of young scientists capable of leading significant research projects. He noted that mega-grant support has enabled the creation of unique research centers where undergraduate and graduate students can work with leading global scientists, gaining valuable practical experience. Sazhin also emphasized that participation in such laboratories helps Russian researchers become globally competitive, a crucial task for achieving scientific breakthroughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the discussion, participants focused on key issues: what mechanisms can attract young researchers to laboratories established under the mega-grant program, what innovative approaches to personnel training can be used, and how to increase the accessibility of grants for young people. Sazhin noted that young scientists participating in research gain unique experience and have the opportunity to work at the forefront of modern science. This enables them to lead major scientific projects, strengthening the Russian scientific community and enhancing its international standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander Balyshev, Vice Rector of the Higher School of Economics, discussed the university’s strategies for supporting young scientists and researchers. These include academic reserve programs, internships, and grants that enable students to engage in research activities early in their studies. Balyshev emphasized that, through its grant programs, HSE can provide its students with the necessary tools for career advancement and scientific achievement. He noted the importance of combining government support programs with university initiatives, which helps unlock the potential of young researchers and strengthens their position in science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his presentation, Alexander Barulin, a research fellow at the MIPT Center for Photonics and 2D Materials and winner of the 10th megagrant competition, also shared his experience of international research and noted the importance of programs that facilitate the return of talented scientists to Russia. He emphasized that grant support and collaboration between scientific institutions and high-tech companies help attract young professionals, providing them with favorable conditions for professional growth and fulfillment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final part of the discussion focused on innovative approaches to supporting young scientists and the effectiveness of the mega-grant program. Participants proposed ideas for improving the competition conditions for young researchers, which could increase the program’s appeal. Among the proposals were changes to the grant application process and the development of new forms of recognition and incentives for young scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mega-grant program has already demonstrated high effectiveness in training young professionals prepared to undertake complex and significant projects. Events such as the discussion at Technoprom-2024 serve as an important platform for exchanging experiences and developing new strategies to advance Russian science and create a competitive workforce.
