Path in Science

Professor Sergei Sazhin has received his PhD in St Petersburg State University (Russia) during the period of 1972 – 1977. Currently, he is working as Head of Laboratory

Professor of Thermal Physics in the University of Brighton (2002-2025).

Currently, he is working as Head of Laboratory Multiphase Precision Technologies, Kutateladze Institute of Thermophysics, Novosibirsk, Russian Federation (2024-present). 

He is serving as a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of many journals including Thermophysics and Aeromechanics (2026-present), Thermal Engineering (2024-present), Fuels (2020- present), International Journal of Engineering Systems Modelling and Simulation (2007-present), Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Systems Engineering (2012 – present).

Chairman of the scientific committee of the 27th European Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems, University of Brighton, Brighton, UK (2016).

Member of the program committees of numerous international conferences, including the international conference `Information Technologies and Nano-Technologies’ (ITNT), Samara (Russia), (2015-2020).

He has authored of more than 650 publications, including 6 monographs and 295 papers in international refereed journals. His current ISI Web of Science (Scopus, Google Scholar) citation index is 43 (49, 57).

He has supervised 15 successful PhD completions since 2000. External examiner of numerous PhD theses in the UK and overseas (mainly in France).

Apart from the current mega-grant, his research has been supported by several grants, including ‘Nebulization of drugs and their targeted delivery to the respiratory tract’, grants 24-45-00012 and 82361138571 (Jan 2024 – Dec 2026) supported by the Russian Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Principal investigator and leading researcher in the Russian team), Interdisciplinary grant ‘Liquid and gel-like new generation fuels for engines and power plants for aviation, ground-based and maritime applications’, supported by Russian Science Foundation (grant 23-69-10006; 2023-2026, Investigator). Mega-grant ‘Promising methods of heat transfer control in media with phase and chemical transformation in power generation, chemistry, chemical and electrochemical technologies, and microelectronics’, project No. 075-15-2021-575 (Jan 2023 – Dec 2023) supported by Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education (head of a newly established laboratory), ‘Heating and evaporation of droplets with nano-particles: experimental studies and modelling’ (Dec 2019- Dec 2025) supported by the Royal Society and Russian Foundation for Fundamental Research.
His current research is focused on numerical and analytical/asymptotic modelling of fluid dynamics, heat/mass transfer, and combustion processes in droplets and sprays.
