S.S. Kutateladze Institute of Thermophysics SB RAS

The world's first Institute involved in Thermal Science was established in 1957 in Novosibirsk scientific research center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Institute was headed by Academician I.I. Novikov, a recognized specialist in the fields of thermodynamics and thermophysical properties of substances. From 1964 to 1986 the Institute was headed by Academician S.S. Kutateladze, an outstanding physicist who made significant contribution to thermal physics and heat power engineering, including hydrodynamic theory of boiling crises, the similarity theory of heat exchange processes in physical and chemical transformations and boundary layers in a complex environment, the study of heat transfer and hydrodynamics of liquid metals, etc. In 1994 the Institute of Thermophysics was named after S.S. Kutateladze. The Institute is closely associated with the names of such famous scientists as academicians V.E. Nakoryakov, E.P. Volchkov, M.F. Zhukov, A.I. Leont'ev, S.V. Alekseenko, R.I. Nigmatulin, and A.K. Rebrov. Currently, the Kutateladze Institute of Thermophysics SB RAS, being one of the leading research centers for the heat transfer theory and physical hydro-gas dynamics, is involved in fundamental research in all topical areas of thermophysics that deal with applied problems of heat and hydro power and energy saving.
